For classic car lovers, antique auto insurance may not be tops on your to-do list, but it’s something many classic car lovers learn the importance of only when it’s too late.

Do you love the classic car era from the 1950s? Do your interests run more to the dawn of the automobile age like the Model T and Model A? Perhaps you are more interested in the muscle cars of the 1960s or the classic luxury cars like Rolls Royce and Bentley? No matter what your niche or car era is you will need antique auto insurance to cover your investment. Standard auto insurance policies only work for cars newer than twenty or twenty five years old and if your vehicle is at the far end of that age group you will find that coverage is very limited as the actual insurance value for the vehicle is much less than what a fully restored collector’s vehicle would be.

There are a number of companies that offer antique auto insurance and none of them are the big insurance giants like Allstate, State Farm, Farmers, etc. You will not have the ability to go to an insurance website like esurance.com. insureweb.com or insurance.com to compare policies for your collector’s vehicle. You will need to contact the various companies directly get individual quotes and then compare them manually yourself. Antique cars generally fall into three categories based on the age of the vehicle. The first category is vehicles over twenty years old. The second category is for those vehicles produced before 1903 and those made between 1903 and 1933.

Generally vehicles depreciate with age while antique cars that are restored or in original condition actually appreciate over time. Because of this factor most antique auto insurance policies require a professional appraisal to set the value of the vehicle. If you transport your vehicle instead of driving it to shows there are special policies to cover your vehicle while in transit.

You will not have you regular comprehensive and collision coverage’s although there still will be uninsured and under-insured driver coverage as well as property damage, medical coverage, etc. Since collision will not be able to be estimated due to the lack of available parts you may be without your antique vehicle for months while it is being repaired. If your vehicle is in the gray area near the time where antique vehicle coverage starts and regular auto insurance ends you may want to opt for the more expensive antique auto insurance because even though you may purchase the higher premium full replacement insurance for your vehicle that coverage usually limits you to a comparable new vehicle rather than a fully restored antique vehicle.

JC Taylor is a company that provides two types of antique auto insurance policies. One is for vehicles older than 19 years and covers farm tractors, military vehicles, antique delivery trucks and of course, cars. The second type of policy covers modified vehicles including street rods, custom kit cars, exotics, rare cars, hot rods, replicas and modifieds. Their coverage includes the entire United States and will pay the “agreed value” based on market conditions and condition of the vehicle with no deductible in the case of a loss.

Whether you need antique auto insurance for that 1950’s muscle car, a prized antique pickup truck, or just the family sedan, getting quotes can be as easy as making a single phone call to an insurance broker or going online to any of the aggregator sites.

Progressive Insurance company has spent millions of dollars creating an atmosphere of being completely open about their insurance premiums going so far as to give you the premiums of up to three different competitors so that you can make the comparison on their site. Their theory is that if you are already on their site that unless the competition is considerable less that you will buy from them anyway.

Progressive can show you what your premium will be from other companies although they not apply any discounts you may be eligible for due to any affiliations you may have. GEICO gives additional discounts to people who work for certain companies, are alumni from many universities and colleges, and to people who belong to certain professional organizations. They would not be able to apply any of those discounts and show the discounted premium.

Most of the large insurers will have special rates for “special tag” cars – antique automobiles, military vehicles, and other rare or unusual collectibles.

Most major insurance companies require your social security number to even give you a quote because they are basing your policy premium on your credit scores. There still is no empirical evidence that if your credit scores are below a certain point that you will make more claims or have more accidents as a result. What you may want to do is check with a broker to let you know which insurance companies offer policies without a credit check to see if there is a difference in premiums or coverage that you are required to carry.

If you use a broker or a direct company agent either one will be able to give you options on whether it would be in your best interest to insure all of your vehicles under a business umbrella policy or to keep your business and personal vehicle use completely separate. If you are going to have a new driver on your policy in the next year or so now is the time to get as many quotes from as many companies as possible. A new full licensed driver will cause your premium to almost double on any vehicle that you have comprehensive and collision insurance on. If you have a vehicle that you only need to carry liability then you need to discuss what your options are and whether your current insurance company will allow you to designate your new driver to the least insured vehicle.

Make sure you tell the broker or company that you are looking to insure an antique automobile. Some insurance companies require the new driver to be on the newest vehicle whether that is the actual case or not. The best thing you can do is to talk directly with a broker or your agent and get the exact way your new driver will be assigned. You will also need to make sure that if they are named as the primary on a particular vehicle that they drive that one all the time so that there will be no issues in case of an accident.

Antique Auto Insurance provides information, insight, resources, and quotes for classic car lovers.

Insuring your antique automobile is one of the most important things you can do to safeguard your investment, and the time and devotion you put into your antique car, truck, or motorcycle.

As fewer and fewer antique cars remain in existence, their prices invariably go up. Many classics are completely irreplaceable.

There’s no worse feeling for an antique car buff than seeing their prized possessions become damaged, stolen, or otherwise lost with no way to recuperate. The time and attention put into these cars may never be recovered, but with an adequate antique auto insurance policy, at least the owner can sleep a little more soundly knowing that in the worst case all is not lost.
